About Us

This webpage is an attempt to start a conversation about space-based solar power for agricultural purposes.  We have build a visualization in the form of an interactive map around concepts that have been discussed in different scientific spheres in an attempt to engage people who might be less familiar with the scientific concepts involved.

It is a product of Dr. Don Flournoy’s Visual Communication class at Ohio University’s School of Media Arts and Studies, part of the Scripps College of Communication. Students involved are as follows:

Max Alvarez, Sophmore in Digital Media Production

Alex Wiseman, Junior in Digital Media Production

Alex Welsh, Junior in Digital Media Production

Rashmi Sharma, Master’s candidate in Communication and Development Studies

Rashmi is a Ford Foundation Fellow from India.  Before coming to Ohio, she worked for World Bank project for Decentralized Watershed Management in the Himalayan region of India. She enjoys working with mountain communities and her interest is documenting stories of participatory development. As part of her work, she has created short films telling community members’ stories, and also created various print media for development.

Adedayo Ogundimu, Master’s candidate in Communication and Development Studies

Adedayo, a Nigerian, is a Community Mobilization/Community Development Specialist with 22 years’ field experience in the planning and management of sustainable development project interventions. Dayo is interested in applying space solar power for irrigation and preservation fruits and vegetables in Nigerian rural communities. This will go a long way to eliminate wastage, assure year-round supply, generate more employment, increase rural income and reduce poverty.

Brian Woods, Master’s candidate in Communication and Development Studies

Brian worked as a news videographer for almost a decade before serving in the United States Peace Corps as an English teacher in Ukraine.  Since completing his service, he has been active in documenting the history of the Crimean Tatar ethnic minority.  His main interest is using communication theory to work towards social justice.
